Tonight the EAC participated in an event to inform parents of preschoolers how to better reduce, reuse, and recycle. Our booth included a hand-out with different ideas for the three R's and some examples. We had a lot of fun teaching parents how to be more environmentally-friendly and kids not to eat candle wax. No really, they didn't try to eat Lexi's recycled candles but they did try to steal them. :-)

The end of a triumphant semester

To all those who know the Environmental club well, we know that this semester was one to remember. The events that took place were productive for the health of the environment and for the club and set a precedent for semesters to come. We had a stream clean-up that was well attended by a group of promising new members, several educational movie showings, a river clean-up in Kansas City, a wreath building event, and of course, an eco-friendly fashion show. Next semester we will go forward once again, attempting to spread the importance of respect and conservation of our earth's natural resources. This year's Missouri River Relief event revealed two things about environmentalism. One, not enough is being done to cut out the large amounts of plastic being thrown away each day, and two, EAC members are willing to do their part. We had 6 volunteers that went to the event and we all had an awesome time. There was hot dogs, for those who like hot dogs, (which I do), there was a boat ride, animal crackers, and of course, tons of plastic bottles to clean up. Some notable finds by the EAC members this year: A log that looked like a fish (way to go Karen), and a freezer (which Dr. Frazier and James so diligently extracted from the ground). KC City Market Adventure

Our organization is a strong advocate of local commerce for more than a few reasons. The few that I will mention are the obvious benefits of using less energy to get to your plate. Locally grown means less travel time. Also, local food usually uses much less pesticides and harmful chemicals to be grown and is grown by space-conscious farmers who utilize as little land as possible to grow the food they sell. And the food they sell is often grown from seeds that are native or original and in no way genetically modified. PLUS, the food is so fresh, once you try it you will never want to go back to Wal-mart (or your choice of supermarket) again. We took a trip there Sun., Sept. 27, to allow the club members to experience the long tradition and all of the great food that's available! Check out there Web site and good eating to you all!

Fall 2009 Stream Clean-up

As a Missouri Stream Team we are making it our priority to be a major part of keeping Warrensburg area streams clean for our own, and future generation's, enjoyment. Here's a shot of everyone who participated in our Sept. 17 Stream Clean-up in West Park (the EAC's designated stream). Some notable finds: A sweater, several tires, a dishwasher cover, and some things I'm sure most of you would rather not know were in the streams. Thanks to everyone who participated and we hope to see even more people out there next time!

Environmental Awareness Club
Aug. 6, 2009

NEW BUSINESS

Meetings- Tentatively planned for Tuesdays at 5 p.m. in the Union by room 306.
Meeting plans- Introduction, Reading of minutes, Reading of Agenda (whole list), Discussion, voting at end of meeting, and a Motion to end meeting.
Movie night- Will be held Thursday, Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Union (room to be announced). We will give away an organic chocolate bar and a stainless steel water bottle from the e-mail list. There will be an introduction presentation before the movie and a brief presentation about the subject following the movie.
Involvement Fair- We will need a table. We will be creating a poster board with photos and our mission statement. There will be a list of planned events. Fliers for Toxic Garbage Island will be available. And we will be handing out little aloes to the first 15 or 20 people who sign up on our e-mail listing as well as a display of plants.
Club Constitution- Final changes will be made at our next official meeting and then will be submitted to the Student Activities office along with our new meeting time.
350.org Kick-off event- Ben will prepare a speech concerning the need for local farming and agriculture and how it somewhat relates to the carbon and methane emissions as well as addressing other environmental concerns. That is Aug. 28 at the Warrensburg Courthouse.
350.0rg Event- Oct. 24 is the event and plans for our involvement will be made at a later date.
TO DO: Monday we will be painting the posterboard for the Involvement fair as well as planting our aloes. Ben: Write speech and request room for movie night. Julia: Take pictures of farmer's market and print them off on-line. Terrah: Take extra photos, print them on-line, call Garden Club for extra aloes, and finish final draft of Constitution for club consideration at next meeting.

Canoe trip underway

It pains me to say that not all our members were able to attend the highly anticipated canoe trip this summer but fortunately we have two highly qualified representatives taking to the water ways. Our President and Vice President Ben Knapp and Julia Scott will be heading to the river this coming weekend for a fun and stream cleaning filled day and one night. We hope to have pictures to post at a later date.

End of semester, beginning of adventures for the UCM Environmental Awareness Club

It is the end of the semester and we would like to do a brief recap of what we have accomplished and if you read previous blogs you will find one that lists events we are planning for next semester. That does not include the exciting summer activities we all hope to be taking part in.
Semester Recap- Started meetings again in February, elected officers, revised constitution, Planned and carried out an activity at the Warrensburg Earth Day Festival, Took part in Mess on the Mall by handing out fliers showing students where they can recycle, ways to reuse and reduce, and why it's important, Made a coalition with the Warrensburg group Citizens For Environmental Action, created a t-shirt design.
Summer plans- Work on implementing a do-not-mail registry in Warrensburg, work with the Organization for Responsive Government to show documentaries on campus, fundraisers, Work on a recycling program in one of the residence halls, AND JACK'S FORK TRIP! Two days in August of camping, canoeing, and CLEANING THE RIVER! Earth Day Festival 2009!

The day of April 18 began somewhat dreary and rainy. And when we say somewhat, we mean EXTREMELY! Non-the-less Earth Day Festival was a hit! Tons of parents, kids and interested citizens showed up and had a great time learning about ways that they can better help the environment that offers them so much. These are a couple pictures from the EAC atcivity. (No one's smiling because they're concentrating but all of the kids had TONS of fun!)Check out our displayed door at the Consignment Company in downtown Warrensburg near Pine Street and hopefully you can join us next year!

If you are checking out our blog to see what we've been up to, you'll notice we are working extremely hard to get the club back on it's feet, including making some extensive and exciting plans for the fall semester. We hope to have a monthly movie showing, hold a series of events dedicated to having an eco-friendly Christmas, and make several trips to the Kansas City Farmer's market among other things! Tentative schedule of events for Fall 2009
August:
Aug. 3-4: Jack’s Fork Stream Clean-up Will include: camping, water quality monitoring, fishing, and canoeing.
Aug. 18-21 OR Aug. 24-28: Week of Welcome Involvement Fair Will include: visual presentations, pictures of summer activities, list of events, hand-outs, collecting interested students contact information and handing out our own.

Sept. (second or third Saturday): River Market in Kansas City Will include: Trip to Kansas City, Farmer’s market, crafts, exotic cuisine

April 10, 2009

OLD BUSINESS:
Movie Night:

We will be getting the movie in May and showing it next semester. Plans for the movie will be finalized at the special meeting held on Sunday, April 12 at 12 p.m.

Mess on the Mall:

We will be collecting e-mails and contact information for people who are interested in our organization, as well as putting our contact information on the recycling handouts.

T-shirts:

Warrensburg Earth Day Festival:

Final meeting before Festival to be held at Cave Hollow Park, Tues., April 14 at 5:30.

Plans to pick up supplies will be made at the special meeting on Sunday.

SGA:

Meeting to discuss new by-laws will be held on Monday, April 13 from 6-9:30. Members attending will be Gazendra, Terrah, Ben and possibly Julia.

Constitution:

Final draft will be voted on at the special meeting on Sunday.

Student Funding Committee:

A 5 minute oral presentation will be prepared for our SFC meeting discussing why we are seeking funding. Ben and Julia will be working on that presentation.

March 25, 2009

OLD BUSINESS:
Movie Night:

Ben has not heard about a room so he will be reapplying for April 9 at 6 p.m. (let’s keep our fingers crossed on this one!)

Mess on the Mall:

The EAC is now responsible for creating hand-outs for students that shows different possibilities of recycling. Need to be completed before April 22 for the Mess on the Mall event.

T-shirts:

Ben is now in charge of creating a design for our club T-shirts. Terrah (me) is looking into prices. Need to be done in time for Earth Day Festival April 18!

Warrensburg Earth Day Festival:

Sign building event still March 30 from 6-8 p.m. Attending so far: Julia, Ben, Terrah, Nick, Gazendra, yey! Need to finalize plans at next meeting.

Mandatory SGA meetings:

Luckily for us all, the by-laws didn’t pass this time. Not sure what that means yet, and neither do they! J Julia is checking on an e-mail with a sheet that needs to be signed that was supposed to be in March 26.

Farmer’s Market:

Terrah contacted Agriculture and design clubs and is waiting to hear back from design clubs. Will visit some teachers in the design department soon.

Currently checking on water quality testing, training dates. Will know by next meeting.

Johnson County Democrats meeting:

To be held at Justice Center in Downtown Warrensburg, March 26, at 7 p.m.

Discussing progressive topics with UCM and community organizations.

Club Dues:

A due of $1 will be collected at the next general meeting. There is also discussion of a $5 donation to help get the club back on its feet. If you can afford it and want to, bring that as well.

Student Funding Committee:

Completed a form for a request of funds for a canoe/ stream clean-up trip to Jack’s Fork in Eminence Missouri, tentatively Aug. 3-4 and for the Lakota Hemp Days Festival in Oglala South Dakota on June 27-29. We have requested $400 total, $200 for each event and should know sometime in April.

March 28: Earth Hour will be taking place at 8 p.m.-9 p.m. Businesses, residents, governments around the world are taking part in this event. Check out the link for more information.
April 2: Movie night! EAC will be presenting the documentary Garbage Island which shows us that our trash just doesn't disappear.
April 18: Earth Day Festival! Warrensburg Citizens for Environmental Action will be hosting this event and our group will have a booth for children to paint what they see when they think of nature. One member will also be leading a nature walk. Check out the link for more information.
April 22: "Mess on the Mall," will be taking place in front of the Union. Several student organizations will be helping separate recyclable materials from trash. EAC will be handing out pamphlets showing students different options of recycling.
Tentative: Farmer's Market "field trips." EAC is currently assisting Main Street Warrensburg with advertising and recruitment.

Club revitalization and upcoming events

This is the first post for awhile and considering how busy we all are attempting to get the club up and running I will make this short and sweet. As you might be able to find on our profile, our new meeting times are Fridays at 2 p.m. in the Union by room 302. Some of the events we are planning for this, and next month, are a movie night where we will be showing GARBAGE ISLAND, taking part in the Warrensburg Earth Day Festival, trips to the local farmer's market, and promotion of our club and movie night by putting out recycling bins and talking with people about the importance of recycling. OLD BUSINESS:
Credit Union account:
Club president, treasurer and staff advisor must visit credit union to sign new signature cards and change mailbox number and address on club account.
Visit to credit union planned for Monday at 1 p.m.- items to bring: check book and copy of club minutes.
3 months worth of inactive fees were refunded to club account adding up to $9!
Dr. Frazier will be researching whether the club must transfer funds to a departmental budget from the outside financial institution.
Movie Night and movie choice:
Votes for movie to play at membership drive will be sent via e-mail by Saturday at midnight.
Room to show movie will be rented by Ben and Julia via student activities Web site for week of March 23 and/or April 1
Constitution:
Revisions were collaborated on by club officers, revised versions will be brought to the *SPECIAL MEETING, and final revisions will be made before being turned into Student Activities Office by next week.
Warrensburg Earth Day Festival:
Plans will be finalized for club activity at *SPECIAL MEETING in order to be prepared for citizens for environmental action meeting being held on March 10 at 5:30.

Video recoders

Video recorders (camcorders) are available at the library for 3 day check outs. 3 days would be long enough for us to make a video if we had it all scripted. i have never made a serious video for anything and the last time i did video tape at all was like 7 years ago.
Maybe one of you guys have done a little movie making before? nevertheless we need to come up with a plan of what to tape if we do want to make a movie.
I would love to show off all my reusing conventions in the video.

Earth Day

Hello everyone. It is now crucial for us to start some serious planning for Earth Day.

We already have some ideas:

1) Environmental Art Contest - we will probably be able to get an Art faculty member for a judge.

2) We will probably be able to have a guest speaker from an environmental consulting firm.

3) Mud Pit (if they let us, I'm for it :-))

I have opened a discussion board topic for Earth Day planning. Feel free to join in (even if you're new and haven't been to a meeting yet).
